Why do smoke detector batteries go dead at 4am? by YakkoWarner2002-07-23 09:55:41
Hate to state the obvious ... by mufasa 2002-07-23 14:19:10
but 4 am is probably about the time of the coldest indoor temperature during the night.
Like most chemical reactions, batteries perform worse in lower temperatures, so a half-dead battery will drop to a rather lower voltage during the coolest part of the night - hence triggering the under-voltage alert on the smoke detector.
