...I don't think McDonald's should have been liable for more than medical expenses and legal fees. Putting a cup of steaming hot coffee - even if it's at the normal tempurature of 130 or 140F - between your legs is a silly thing to do.

Then again, buying a liquid that hot in a drive-thru to be consumed in a moving vehicle is pretty dumb in itself. Accidents happen. People spill coffee and people get burned when that happens. I've certainly never considered suing Kenmore when I burn my hands grabbing a hot oven rack...because it's my fault. I'm the clumsy oaf who forgot to grab an oven mitt, just as she was the clumsy oaf who dropped her coffee. Jail sentences should be mandantory for plaintiffs who seek damages that exhorbitant, as well as for juries who award such dollar amounts.
