Had England won, it would have been a civil war, but since the Americans declared and successfully defended their independance, it must be called a war of independance. You cannot have a civil war between two countries.

Americans were Americans long before the Revolutionary War. They were also English subjects, but the colonials were Americans.

The majority of the wars America has been in, have been to come to the aid of our European allies, or as part of a coallition.
