Only in hindsight. by breezeblock 2002-07-23 06:39:59
The map was a bit different then. "America" consisted of the strip of eastern seaboard from Boston to New York. The interior had not been touched. The British Dutch and large parts of German troops were fighting the penninsula wars against Napoleon who had invaded the whole Spanish and Portugese penninsula with French, Polish and German troops along with native recruits. The British actually got kicked off the penninsula and were in deep trouble. Then a chap called Arthur Wellsley was appointed supreme commander and we took back Portugal, Spain, Belgium and finally France. We then had about a year off (1813-1814) while Napoleon was exiled and then He came back and had another pop at world domination. We beat him in Belgium just outside of a small town called Waterloo. Those battles (starting in the late 1700s to 1814) against Marshal Ney (who was an excellent general and superb tactician) were of far more import than a rebellious colony half-way around the world.
