every time the Britsh fight the French, they try to win in America & India while paying the Germans and Dutch to fight the French in France. Therefore, losing the US was a MAJOR defeat. (Which would be why we actually had troops on European soil in 1800-1815: there wasn't anywhere else to fight the French!)
