a key detail about a "MacGuffin" (which is how they spell it in "The Pocket Essentials Alfred Hitchcock" by Paul Duncan), is that while it drives or motivates the plot, it itself plays a very small role in it. (In the example previous given, the Maltese Falcon is only on screen for about 30 seconds in the movie)
