You'd have to define Biblical... | by slacktime | 2002-07-22 10:42:46 |
| Interesting approach. |

Point 1: No one 'threw out' Christ's allegory. The challenge was to prove the literal existence of a consciously existing hell. An allegory or illustration simply doesn't qualify, as it is just that, an illustration.
Point 2: Obviously, the very basis of the question belies that the entire Bible isn't "symbolic". It would be meaningless to ask for evidence in a symbol (see point 1), therefore the parameters of the discussion accept that the Bible contains accurate facts and history as well as using illustrations.
Point 3: If we can't start with a few givens, then we can't even actually communicate, can we? For instance, there is a fairly universal definition of "Biblical". If there were not, publishers would have an extremely difficult time compiling a Bible for sale. To participate in a meaningful dialog, it would be beneficial to accept that standard; otherwise, wisdom would be not to participate.
Point 4: "All that could be accomplished by attempting your challenge is a long drawn out and ultimately meaningless flame war." Certainly not. Jesus himself addressed "hot button" topics during his ministry. Throughout history, discussions of this type, when approached honestly, have been the springboard for deeper understanding and religious appreciation. Perhaps you mean that you would not have approached it honestly. If that is your point, I thank you for saying "no thanks" and bid you good day. |
