My college major was Music Education. My military career was military policeman and carpenter until that fateful day when I decided to wander around in what I could of the Wang mini-computer system I was using. I found a "macro" file ("Glossary" in Wang-speak) that included a short macro called "AutoLogin". Studying the short (6-8 lines) piece of code I determined that a userid and password were stored there in plain text. I tried the combo out and discovered that it was one of the current sysadmin's login! Unfortunately, I didn't follow my first rule for such activitiy ("never at your own terminal") and got caught. Well, long story short, I was dragged in front of the chief sysadmin where I demonstrated how I had found what I had found and 2 weeks later he hired me into the computer section. The rest is history!
