| We've got plenty of OTHER words to set up division lines among the world's religions. You've got Jews and Gentiles. Or Muslims and infidels, if you'd like to be on another side of the fence. Once you get into the Christians, you've got Protestants and Catholics. Finally, once you get into Protestantism, you get to names of specific religions, and even some of them are divided up even further. So why should the God-and-Allah types have all the fun? Why can't they lump you lot together (apparently, "the enemy" is just too broad) with a special word that can be whispered conspiratorily when you walk into the room? Dammit, America is all about equal oppurtunity. We want prejudice and grouping for all, and to all a good night. So you see, there just has to be a word that describes everyone who doesn't believe in God or Allah, for the sake of convenience while hating someone. Curiously, is there a menacing word for God-and-Allah types? "Damned Dirty Monotheists" is really a lot of trouble to say. :) |
