Christanity has revised it's views on a few things over the years. Reciently churches revised their view of hell and have now said it's not like this fire and brimstone place. They had a discussion on it on 60min or some other news show.
I'm trying to remember what I was taught years ago. :P Both in sunday school and western civ's religious studies portion.
But I think hell was created when lucifer was cast down from the heavens as a fallen angel. Prior to that no hell existed. Then for every soul that was cast out lucifer took them in. They were a load of rebels who didn't particularly like the way heaven was run. So took to other methods for how they thought things should be(anarchists of a sort<shrug>). Their world became what was known as hell. Then both sides decided to play with man. God offered heaven, etc for good behaviour... Lucifer promised a good time and doing whatever you want with no room for good or moral rules.
I can't remember where the fire and brimstone came in. I think it was with the canaanites in the bible. I actually still have my old report on religion here.(yes its from 1986 and amazingly I still have it)
From it in refrence to fire and destruction:
Re Canannites:
Deutronomy 12:3
And ye shall overthrow their alters, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.
Levitiucus 18:21
And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am Lord.
Deutronomy 12:31
Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
My bibliography for the report(which was 42 pages long):

Several religions have no concept of hell. Just like not all christianities have concept of purgatory. A few have something "like" hell but I think they work off their missdeads... or are sent to earth(reincarnated) to do better so that they can carry onto the next level when they die. In many pagan religions the belief is the circle of life... ie life, death, and reborn.(aka reincarnation) Some of which of those believe your deeds in this life decide the path of your next and what you'll be. Christianity originally believed in reincarnation so I was told by my religious studies teacher.(she was roman cathloic and devot and taugh my western civ class) However they revised things and for awhile it was stricken from new productions of the bible or at least reworded. They felt society would run amuck if they felt they had a chance at comming back.(reincarnation) So moral quality of society would fail. Apprently the bible has been revised to deal with how society was at the time more than once. Also its had revisions due to lingustic issues. Slang of the time it was created is diffrent from today, as is the original languages it was created in. They were also oral stories for awhile before being put to paper(as with several religions) Which would of slightly altered with each tellers tale. Also the translations into more than one language originally proved issue. Due to the fact that somethings either just can't be translated or not easily.(same can be said with even modern languages as there are some phrases that just don't have an equivalnt existing across the board)
The view of lucifer or satan having hornes and hooved feet come from the time when christianity was doing the crusades afik. It was in refrence to the god Pan and also the god Cerunos<sp> who were male gods, etc. Part of the usage of that was due to the christian "trinity" I think and the fact that the common pagan one at the time was matriarcal... ie instead of the father, the son and the holy ghost there was maiden, mother and chrone. So a bit of gender battling... In christianity there was Mary/mother. In pagan there was the oak king and the holly king... In other religions this is diffrent. But common practices in most non christian religions included making offerings on an alter(most used food I think a few used something a bit more gruesome which is no longer in use), and burned incense. They also had fires of course for meals and things but also used them for night ceremonies. Several beliefs I think view fire as "purification" so perhaps thats also where part of the fire and brimstone bit comes in.<shrug>
Anyhoo goodluck... |
