We even got a 'dry' district in England! by breezeblock 2002-07-22 06:49:46
True! Bourneville in Birmingham (home of Cadbury's chocolate) Cadbury was a quaker and was into total abstinence. When he built his chocolate factory he also decided that his workers deserved better treatment than they usually got so he supplied housing and amenities. The area became known as Bourneville. Because of his good work (relieving the Birmingham city council of its housing problem) the council passes a byelaw banning the sale of alcohol in Bourneville. That ban still stands today and there are no pubs or off-licences in Bourneville, and Supermarkets cannot sell booze!
