In the Old Testament it was believed that all people who died went to basically the same place. This place was divided by the River Styx. On one side of the river was Abraham's Bosom which was the equivalent of Heaven, and on the other side was Hell. This may be what your roomate is refering to. a link with some relevant Bible verses _{Disclaimer: This author does not claim to be a Bible expert.
