I'm not knowledgable in PHP at all, but structure it so it makes sence. Reading any script or programming code should be just like reading the news paper!

Check and see if find_replies() is defined near the top of the main script.

I always thought the order of things were to declare variables first always, then define functions second always, and then write the actual program?

I know some languages don't require you to explicitly declare variables now days, but still, the rest of the order of things should be more or less held... right? :P
