...your parents didn't have much confidence in the upbringing they had given you, if they feared that $FORM_OF_MUSIC, if objectionable, would corrupt your beliefs and/or values, rather than galvanize them.
Or have they not heard or read and understood that, "It is not what enters one's mouth that defiles that person; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one."? (Mt.15:11, NAB) Even taken in context of the surrounding text (the Pharisees' handwashing question), the principle seems to apply.
Your teacher, on the other hand, apparently didn't hold other people (based on the gossip), let alone their opinions, in much esteem.
I don't suppose you had honest, *calm* discussions with both your parents (first) and the teacher (later), regarding the supposed merits (in her opinion) and the supposed dangers (in your parents' opinion[s]) of $FORM_OF_MUSIC? I am inclined to assume not, because if your style of "debate" (not the irony above, but what I see when someone *really* rattles your cage) is any indication, at least one of your parents wan't the "calm discussion" type, when sufficiently pressed.
Of course, since I think your parents and the teacher were *both* wrong, in one way or another, all that I'd learn from knowing what $FORM_OF_MUSIC was, would be which I thoght were crazier; and that'd just be my own, irrelevant opinion, so I don't think I really want to know.

P.S. The main difference between liberal bigots and other bigots is shame. Liberal bigots convince themselves that they aren't bigots, to avoid feeling shame; other bigots aren't ashamed of being bigots, so they don't bother convincing themselves they aren't. Personally, I like to take one or more of each, and knock their heads together, repeatedly, until they both stop talking. |
