is an other name for the deep linking. If you don't see those ads (which you block anyway) then they supposedly make less money to keeps the server(s) up. Does anyone actually click those on purpose?

Some hosts check the Referrer tag in the HTTP header to see if it's from their host (the page requesting the image is hosted by them and full of bloat), and if it's not, they'll send their logo in place. Some will send it anyway, if you don't send the Referrer tag at all.
