While I don't mind playful banter, especially when one knows one's opponent can take it and even enjoy it, one can go too far, and move from a reasoned discourse to a word war. Many of your responses to xti were not really in the realm of playful, and focused on his failings rather than any points he'd made.

True, perhaps. One might also say: "If you continue to discuss *at all* while they prattle on, then you are clearly just wasting your time." Some people are not just worth debating, frankly, whether refusing to debate them looks like weakness or not (since when have you cared what others think?). Still, it does no harm to treat people well, even if refusing to take part in their discussions.
