Various Xbox forums tell you to do exactly that in order to connect an Xbox hard drive to a standard PC. IDE cables are "ok" to disconnect and connect with the power on -- there's no real power going through that cable as a matter of course (at least, nothing like the twelve volts going through the power cable). I was working on one machine, hit the power button, and pulled a PCI card out. I heard a very peculiar noise, and realized that the computer wasn't powered down, it was just on standby. Now that's something they don't like.
