The modification to the original Pledge was not intended to refer to the title "God", it was intended to refer specifically to the Judeo-Christian deity typically refered to by the name "God". Even if it did just refer to some arbitrary title, it still excludes a slew of polytheistic and other religious variants.
And before you try saying that allowing polytheism into our culture somehow degrades the country's ability to be Good and Right, keep in mind that most belief systems have essentially the same basic moral code, including the whole "do unto others..." thing. |
