It's an issue that should be dealt with by parents and guardians.

Teach children the alphabet. Teach them their numbers. Teach them the basics of how to read and write, and the 4 basic math functions. Give them the tools. Let the parents and guardians worry about their socialization.
Notice nobody has suggested using the HIV character to teach HIV positive kids to be tolerant of others' fear and ignorance of their disease. Or that it's *their* problem, not the people around them.
