Is the relevant part of the comparison. Nobody tried to "accept" their illness, and let them associate with un-infected people.

"my fancy knee jerking" isn't a response to "political correctness". It's not fancy knee jerking, it's disagreeing with an entire philosophy.

"All elephants are pink. Nellie is an elephant. Therefore Nellie is pink."

"But I'm looking at Nellie. Nellie is gray."

"you only appear to display some fancy knee jerking in response to pink elephants. Elephants used to be gray, back in the bad old days when used them as sex slaves."

"Uhm.. we never used elephants as sex slaves."

"You're just brainwashed and indoctrinated in the old-fasioned way of thinking and in guilty denial for the evils perpetrated by all you backward, thoughtless hate-mongers, before we established elephants to be equal and deserving of special rights, like the right to mate with parakeets, which you so fervently oppose."

"Well, I must admit I find the image rather absurd. But I don't know of any elephants that would *want* to mate with parakeets."

"That's beside the point! Maybe an elephant might one day *want* to mate with a parakeet. Who're you to decide the sexual appetites of elephants?"

"I dunno. Someone with judgement?"

"And another thing; we've got to do away with that pyramid on the money. It reminds the poor elephants of their treatment at the hands of the Pharoahs. Further, we should give them restitution."

"But, the pyramids were built thousands of years ago, on the other side of the planet. How did modern elephants suffer from that? How are we responsible for the actions of people we never knew, long ago?"

"There you go again, with your fancy knee-jerking responses."

The above is what many of these arguments look like from where I sit. I imagine that's what they look like to many others from where they sit (with my arguments being the silly elephantine ones.) And that's okay. However, consider:

Someone posts a message asserting, or worse, *presuming* that sexual promiscuity (for example) is just fine, and completely benign.

I respond saying that sexual promiscuity is irresponsible, immature and destructive of society.

Now, I find the first statement absurd and offensive. Others undoubted find the second statement absurd and offensive.

Which one should be pushed into the woodwork?
Who should decide?

I guess you're right after all; I have been in the woodwork. Not because I'm a sneaky troll who doesn't believe his own words but is just anxious to cause trouble. Because I come to this place to read the comics. I think they're cute, funny, and largely benign, even when I disagree with them (which is usually.)
I read the message base because among all the tripe there are kernels of information worth having.
But I am an outsider. I don't chatter with the participants about their daily lives. I don't know JPaganel from nin_man, nor their personal posting styles.
But I'm virtually incapable of letting pass statements I consider absurd, contrary to reason, or slanderously misinformative.

I'm tempted to say, "fine, I'll fade back into the woodword". But that's conceding the field of battle and is most likely the reason why it's suggested by those arguing with me that I do so. After all, if you can't win the argument, the next best thing is to gag the opposition.

But I'll fade back into the woodwork, after sharing 3 of the things I've noticed after years of exchanging messages on the internet.

Most bigots don't like to hear their preconceptions challenged.
Most bigots can't see that they're bigotted.
Everybody is a bigot. Everybody.
