.. in the sense that they absorb values from their surroundings. It just so happens that some forms of brainwashing (discipline from parents) are more acceptable than others (mind control experiments, drugs, hypnosis, etc). Note that "discipline" above is used in the army sense, not in the corporal punishment sense.

Being the legal guardian, the mother has the right to impart her values to her child. Which includes Christianity. The biological father is not a legal guardian and does not have the right to impart his values to the child without the guardian's permission. The mother has the upper ground.

The only way an injury could be claimed is if the mother's values were criminal (can you say "contributing to deliquency of a minor?"). Christianity is not illegal, nor is reciting the pledge of allegiance. I think both would be generally regarded as the opposite of contributing to deliquency!

The father's case is practically non-existant at this point.
