We had something similar (not an intercom, ours never did work) up until sixth grade or so, when we all shuffled off to high school. This was in 1989, too. Up until it was made explicitly illegal in 1994 or thereabouts, our football games all opened with a prayer over the PA system. School prayer's still around, I'm sure, in some form even today.
