They're like labor unions. They can fight for the truly oppressed, but they can also be used as tools for those with their own agenda, or used when it's really not appropriate (i.e. getting the same fool who's been fired six times for stealing company property hired back again). Of course, the same could be said for lawyers, government, or just about any organization that is set up to do good but is run by people.
