| How about "under Buddha" or "under Patrick Duffy" then? I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, or a good thing. But the problem is that many people feel that they're being required to pledge an oath to a God that they doesn't believe exists - and that this is oppressive to everyone except monotheists and, with the 'G' being capitalized, Judeo-Christians. From this comes a separation of church and state argument proclaiming that God shouldn't ever be mentioned in the same breath as America in official documents or statements. It's up to you to form your own opinions based on your interpretation of the first amendment and the wording of the Constitution, and it's up to the Supreme Court to decide whether or not it'll stand. I think many people here are forgetting the second part. |
