The capital 'g' does make a difference. The definition you provided applies only to the lower case 'god'. When Capitalized, as it is in the pledge, it is commonly seen as the English name of the Judeo-Christian supreme being, and is thus exclusionary.

Also excluded, regardless of the capitalization, are atheists, polytheists, naturists, and anyone else who doesn't believe in a single supernatural being.

The heart of the matter is that the line wasn't in the original pledge, and doesn't belong in the pledge now.

We want the freedom to reject the impositions of the majority religion.
