Seems to be a pretty generic term to me, but the connotations that people are associating with this particular instance make it impossible for them to get past it and look at the definition. Those who originally placed that line within the pledge may well have, and most likely did, intend the Christian god, but your own argument can be used to support this...

They were concerned that the state not endorse any one religion over another. They didn't preclude religion from being included in gov't-sponsored areas, just as long as no religion was excluded.

Your own words, I believe? C'mon people! Listen to yourselves, look at the definition, and get past the PC. Look beyond the connotations to the root of the word, the heart of the matter, and move along...

Freedom is a state of mind, binding it in false perception and rigidity is the same as surrendering it entirely.
