Kinda reminds me of something I hear a couple of years ago. There seemed to be the beginning of a scandal when somebody started wondering how Bert and Ernie were related. They live together and yet they are not brothers. Wait a minute, could they be gay? On a children show?
urban legends.com states it is an urban legend.
In Germany there apparently is a children's gay group called Ernie and Bert. Here they are parading. The banner says: Es ist keine Phase, es ist unser Leben! (It is not a phase, it is our live!)

(Just to be sure, I'm not implying that the HIV positive muppet is an urban legend.)
