Chill, brethren. Take another gander at Illiad's link to Janis Ian.
You are at a cusp in the software development game and you need to recognize it or be left in the dust.
Code is product. Ideas are product. Music is product.
All are intangible. All are marketable. All are Art, if done correctly.
(Don't yammer about code print-outs being tangible. Sheet music is tangible but it is not music. Code, like music, exists in the mind of the originator. The notation to repeat it may be tangible, but the phenomenon itself is not.)
All CAN BE commercial. All can be done, albeit clumsily, by rank amateurs.
Coding AS SCIENCE is now obsolete.
Welcome to the world of Coding AS ART.
Instead of whining about folks stealing your precious mental output, give the wannabes enough of a taste of this new ART and generate a demand for the higher standards of Code Written Properly.
Why mimic the self-destructive pitfalls of the commercial music industry, when they have ALREADY shown what does and does not work?
Take a look at two seemingly-forgotten data:
IBM/Intel/Gates gave us Open Architecture. Apple/Motorola/Jobs gave us more of the old-line proprietary guff.
Whose platform scored widespread commercial success, in spite of the the other's attempt to lock in a market by GIVING their product to schoolchildren in the hope they would not deviate from the familiar?
Give away samples of your best stuff -- it generates follow-on market demand that pays.
Stop playing injured arteest (sic) and go show the world how much better it is when a GOOD programmer writes the code.
Show them how integrated, synergistic applications can make their life more convenient.
They will thank you with their wallets.
"It is better to drive evolution than be driven by it." -- Me
(Feel free to plagiarize the above proverb.) 8)
