One nation under god...
A lot easier to say than:
One nation under Allah, Bathala, Brahm, Brahma, Brahma, Devi, Durga, Kali, the Great Spirit, Ushas, Yama, Varuna, Zeusm Vishnu, Siva, Shiva, Krishna, Juggernath, Buddha, Isis, Osiris, Belus, Bel, Baal, Asteroth, Thor, Odin, Money... etc?
Insert the name of your god/goddess of choice and move on. The list goes on and on of the deities that have been followed over time by humanity, and since one of the founding principals of the US is religious freedom that single line does make sense.
Sure, the modern secular context associated with it would point toward the Christian god, taking the founding fathers' purest intent instead places an entirely different light on it. Now, don't go pointing out that they were Christians looking to escape persecution in the old world, because that's already known, what I'm pointing out is that the pledge itself is not to blame... it can be interpreted however each person wishes in that regard. |
