Actually, most investment firms want some kind of minimum amount for an account to even be opened because of the costs that are incurred in handling such transacions. There are some that will work as a broker for small deals, but you have to pay farily large fees to them to cover their own nut for doing the business.

That magic number of 5000<local currency equivalent> seems to be a standard across the industry. Got a notice recently of what my IRA looks like. If the US markets don't finish bottoming-out soon, I'll have to make more new deposits into the account to keep from having to pay penalties and fees just to keep it.
