i'd have broken his arm and called it self-defense. violence in the workplace is not acceptable behaviour. i'd go talk to my manager and tell him or her what happened. (a personal note: i have come close to breaking someone's arm for a lot less than that, she walked up behind me and put her hands on my neck/shoulders while i was working intently on something - simply grabbed her wrist - twisted her arm and said "don't do that" and let go). people need to understand that a workplace is for work first. such a trick where i used to work could easily have gotten him shot by security (or at least a very nasty jolt from a taser). talk to your boss and make sure your boss talks to this clown's boss (or if you both report to him/her) sit down and talk about corrective procedures (with HR if necessary).
