I may personally not give a fig whether society lives or dies in the next five generation, as long as I live comfortably. That being the case, then I have no desire to do what is "right" for society, and I only desire to do what is "right" for myself. If so, what care I if it is bad for society if I steal your property, or your life, or lie. As long as I own a battery of lawyers to get me off, and the power to do what I like, I will do what I like.
You can logically think of reasons why certain laws would be "good" for society, but mankind being as selfish as he is he would not consider creating such laws for himself out of a philanthropic nature. No, survival of the fittest and strongest would be the only rule to rein in our societies.
I find it much easier to believe in Divinity, than I do philanthropy out of the powerful. |
