    The Falklands was a set-up! by breezeblock 2006-11-19 12:55:59
see my post here. while the conversation I posted may be false and a micky-take the fact remains that sucessive British governments publicly stated to the Argentinian government that we had a submarine patrolling the south Atlantic and any unauthorised military vessel found within 20 miles of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia would be blown out of the water. In 1981 Margaret Thatcher publicly announced to the Argentinians that that particular sub would be re-tasked. She was at an all-time low in her popularity and we were suffering the worst depression since the 1930's. Let us also not forget that the whole war was started by some Argentinian fisherman who landed on South Georgia and proclaimed it to belong to Argentinia. I am not convinced that they were Argentinian, or if they were then they were encouraged to take this action to provoke a diplomatic incident. Whatever, the rest is history. We lost a lot of good blokes taking those islands. The argentinians lost a hell of a lot more. For what reason? For no other reason than to boost a politician's flagging popularity!
