But when it is on the scale of war crimes, then you have the problem of a whole country misbehaving.
How nice if an individual were solely responsible for punishing himself when he commits a crime. He he he. We all know that is an unreasonable expectation. It requires a higher authority to govern and judge and punish.
Just because the US may be stronger than most other countries does NOT give it the right to behave in any manner they wish - despite slayer's stubbornly contrary opinion.
Realistically, it is quite possible that we _could_ do that, up until such time as enough countries got pissed off at us and took us down a few pegs. Just as with a bully who picks on the smaller kids. Sure, it's possible. But when the smaller kids are smart enough to realize they can join forces, that bully will wish he had thought twice.
Just because something is possible does not make it the wisest course of action.
The UN is as good an overseer as any for handling the issues that shouldn't be relegated to a single country, or even to two single countries. Especially if one country is picking on the other, weaker one. And especially if we wish to avoid the fear of another superpower trying to "take over the world".
The US should NEVER be the world ruler. No country should. But a governing body of ALL the countries is a different matter. When we become the United Countries of Earth, then perhaps we'll be much closer to general peace than we've ever been. |
