You keep using words you cannot define by Naruki 2002-07-09 15:11:56
or that you cannot justify. For example, "should". You cannot logically justify that word in relation to which rights a person has.

You keep quoting the concept of "just, morally good, proper, or fitting" (notice which one I left out). All of those properties are not inherent in humans - or in any other kind of animal. The only "justification" you could give would be religious conviction that they "should" be human rights.

"Just" is a false dream. There is no such thing as true "justice" - unless you believe that a perfect being such as God could determine the "perfect" punishment for every possible crime. And we all know that someone who just throws everybody into a lake of fire isn't that interested in meticulously suiting punishment to crime.

"Morally good" is another false concept - and you can't arbitrarily throw out the word "morally" from the definition you are trying to use. First you have to come up with an acceptable definition of "morally good" that doesn't rely on God - because otherwise your "rights" may not be recognized by atheists.

Do I even need to cover the silliness that is the word "honor"?

A right will not exist AT ALL unless some power can both grant it and punish those who violate it. Otherwise, I could say I've got the right to be God. Nobody will actually give me that, and it's unreasonable to believe I can make it happen on my own, so it's just not a right.

You have the right to remain silent. Where'd that come from? From the government, which is a power greater than your own.

You have the right to life. If God gave it to you, no mere mortal could take it away. The government gives it to you. They tell everyone to respect your right to live, and if someone doesn't, they have promised to mete out punishment to that person.

THOSE are the only rights you can reasonably claim - the ones from real powers of authority. This could simply be your parents, who give you the right to stay up till 11 PM. Or it could be your company, which gives you the right to dress casually on Fridays. Another company couldn't come in and tell you to dress differently. But a power greater than the company might be able to - as long as a power superior to that one would let them.

The highest power on earth so far is either a national government or potentially the UN. Even if God exists, he is a power off earth - not to mention intangible and very hard to contact when you have a question.
