(Quasi)Philosophical Question of the Day by nimdokk2002-07-09 11:12:40

OK, I'll throw my $.02 out for debate...

What is the difference between outlawing forged books, vs. outlawing, say, murder? I could claim an ethical system in which murder is A-OK, is the government then imposing their own brand of ethics on me?

What I think it gets down to is, government exists for the purpose of the protection of its citizens, both from outside forces and from each other. We outlaw murder to protect citizens from being killed by each other. Then, following that through, what would be wrong with outlawing record falsification, creative accounting, etc., in order to protect citizens from having their fortunes robbed by others?
