contrary opinion...... by sumbusch 2002-07-09 08:49:17
not MY opinion, but...... Many Amerikkans really do believe that our system of justice is superior to anything else in any other part of the world; in the unlikely event that any of our soldiers actually DO commit some sort of war crime or atrocity in other parts of the world, they will receive a fair trial and appropriate punishment in our own d@m courts, thank you very much! (no, we are not trying to give ourselves privileges to commit atrocities; we are opposed to atrocities and we will vigorously prosecute any of our own soldiers who do commit atrocities or any other sort of crimes in our own courts....) They are concerned that our soldiers will become the targets of false accusations and sham trials in kangaroo courts, simply because so many evil people hate US and will do anything they can to harm us, and the rules that apply to everyone else do not need to be applied to us because
  • our own courts are capable of prosecuting real war criminals
  • we have special responsibilities as the world's only superpower
  • we are at greater risk than any other country for false accusations

My own opinion is that we must lead the way to world peace; we must embrace and support international organizations that help to lay the foundations for world peace; we must set aside our fears and surrender some aspects of our national sovereignty in the same way that all other civilized nations are doing. The Head Shrub does not seem to agree with MY humble opinion -- strangely enough, he has never even ASKED for my opinion...;)
