Win2K seems to have some issues with many of the games out there. I don't know enough about XP to comment; I've never tried it. But as a bob who once did this type of support, I'd recommend 98SE for games. (Make sure that it's SE, though).

This seems to have been the most stable of the Win9X variants, but you'll still see an occasional crash, most likely. :)

Have you considered running 98 in VMWare?
