The apes from which we descend would not hesitate to react violently when angry or affraid, a rational human being, probably even moreso in the case of a trained police officer, is expected to repress the urge. Is it natural and excusable to want to strike at a difficult suspect, even if he's restrained and pose no threat to you? Yes. Is it natural or excuseable for a rational human being trained in solving conflicts as peacefully as possible to ACT on that urge? Definately not. I agree that his actions don't make him a monster, but my point is that beating up a defenceless individual is not human, it's giving in to animalistic urges |
