Try this: by Nashville 2002-07-02 15:08:43
It may be your modem is timing out before carrier and connection speed can be successfully negotiated. If you're currently on Win2K, try this and see if it helps:

1. Click your Start button.

2. Scroll up to Settings, then click Control Panel.

3. Double-click the Phone and Modem Options control.

4. Click the Modems tab.

5. Click once to highlight the modem, then click the Properties button.

6. Click the Advanced tab.

7. Click the Change Default Preferences button.

8. You will see a text label Cancel the call if not connected within followed by a text box containing a number (usually 60). This is the maximum number of seconds your system will wait for carrier negotiation and establishment. Double-click the number in the text box and change it to something higher, such as 75.

9. Click OK, OK, OK. <g>
