Bloody Hackers! by Naruki2002-07-01 20:50:57
  Hey, I'm a hacker by beez2002-07-01 21:47:52
    r u a good hacker or a b4d h4xx0r? by mindhog 2002-07-03 17:57:36
I think the distinction is pretty much moot at this point. If you tell Joe Public that you're a hacker, he's probably going react in the same way as if you'd said "I'm a con artist".

Knowledge of a system encompasses knowledge of its weaknesses. Just today I hacked into one of my client's systems for legitimate reasons (didn't have the telnet password, server room was 1/4 mile away, and I'd forgotten to bring in the badge that gave me access to it) - does that make me a hacker or a cracker? Probably both. But you and I know the distinction between "I had to hack into our server" [hacker = clever sysadmin] and "some *&%(! hackers got into my server!" [hacker = vandal] by virtue of the context

However, all told, I guess I prefer the completely derogatory "Script Kiddie" for the little bastard who got into my server...
