There's only so much you can do to protect your systems when you've got a non-techie sharing your PC with you. *sigh*
Especially when she visits Japanese sites that have a whole different class of social engineering to sneak trojan horses into your box.
The thing that gave it away was when I clicked on a link in my email program, and the modem attempted to dial. That thing hasn't been connected to a phone line in over a year, so I instantly suspected something was up.
Also, when I rebooted, I saw a strange dialog box pop up. By strange, I mean that it had almost all the text replaced by question marks, and the only English letters were "ISDN" in parentheses.
Going thru Task Manager, I found out it was a program allegedly called BEAT.EXE in my System32 folder. There were associated OCX and INF files in other locations. There was also another program called XBEAT.EXE. This ticks me off.
Looking in the same locations, I spotted about 5 other proggies just like it: cake, cherry, dialer, and a couple that said "eng" with some numbers.
Apparently my SO had accidentally run one of those without thinking after visiting a web page - I'm going to have a talk with her later.
Argh. This is why hackers should be forced to feed off spammers until both vile species are dead. |
