yes actually I often get source and compile my own. Though for a few things I'll admittedly be lazy and just rpm it using a redhat or mandrake rpm. Are those other *nix varients you mention much alike or very diffrent from eachother? I'm wondering how hard it is from someone used to one of the varients suddenly on/switching to/trying another varient.
