First, I've always said pick a gender and call me that - if I don't like it, you'll be the first to know. Second, I tend (90% of the time) to use the masculine pronouns for gender unknown references, as that was the proper way to do things when I learned English. Third, I am not gender bound to avoid/seek any links, nor do I really think of anyone in those terms.
