..but in fact it's staying the same size and everything is shrinking towards the middle.

Sort of a 3D version of what happens when you're sat in a railway carriage and another train beside yours moves and you're not sure whether it's you that's moving or the other train.

It's another of those relativistic effects. Where's Albert E. when you need him?
