    This is very true -- VNC was designed for... by DaNutBall2002-06-25 01:39:18
      I do the VNC thing as well. by allegory 2006-11-19 12:55:59
It works beautifully. You only need to have the SSH port open to the world for it to work. I've also never gotten X forwarding to work very well with putty. It worked better when I used ssh from Network Simplicity.
Anyway. Here is what I do for the vnc thing...

SSH to the machine (login) and start a vnc server

execute (on outside machine): ssh -L 5901:a.b.c.d:5901 -N e.f.g.h
a.b.c.d = vnc server IP address
e.f.g.h = ssh server address
In your case they'd be the same

Now start vnc client on the outside machine and connect to the local port (localhost:1).

I've used it when the linux box is the firewall box and someone else inside is running vnc for me. Then you can have the firewall forward the connection to that box inside somewhere like a relay.

Obviously, if your vnc server is display 2 or something, then your port will be different. Usually its offset by 5900. server 0 == Port 5900, server 1 = 5901 . . .

hope this helps.
