I'm serious - write your own forum. It's certainly not a trivial task, but you'll learn more about the way things actually work (than you probably would ever want to know). Personally, I'd do it in php/mysql. Some of the things you have to plan for are kind of interesting, especially if you want a threaded structure.

Hmm, maybe I'll write one today.
