... and I don't consider myself a particularly competent driver anyway - too easily distracted or off in La La land!
Besides, here in Shenyang, China all you need to drive a car is money to buy one (well you do need to drive around a school football field a few times for your test) and the only recognised road rule is that the most expensive car has right of way and pedestrians and cyclists should get down on their knees and grovel at the car owner's superior wealth when he blasts his horn (we're very provincial out here - it's much better in Beijing where the road rules are well enforced and most drivers respect everyone else on the roads). I've seen far too much human road-kill to have a positive attitude to cars anymore.
That makes it sound like it is all the drivers' fault, but I should add that the cyclists and pedestrians are completely stupid too. They don't consider that a vehicle such as a car or a double-decker-bus needs much longer to stop than they do. And look at the traffic before crossing the road? Not likely. It seems mostly to be older people (30+) and I'm wondring if it is from growing up when there are almost no cars about - possibly automatic road-sense has to be learned young to stick. I've had to grab my wife by the back of the jacket to stop her stepping onto the road in front of a van 50m away doing 50 kliks on an iced road. I always get stroppy at the way motorists blast their horn when I'm waiting to cross the road. Do they think I'm going to step right in front of them? Well yes, and I've seen enough people try to do just that!
I rarely go out these days, only to class or the local supermarket and occasionally I get a bus to the computer shopping center. Much safer on the internet! |
