I've never tried this... by glenalec 2002-06-23 16:48:59
...but apparently if you hold a strip of video tape along the card's magnetic strip and run the edge of a warm iron along it you end up with a half-strength data image on the card (still machine readable, and will be re-written by the machine next time you use it) and the same on the piece of tape which is now good to be glued to a blank card.

Anyone know if this really works?

And DragonLady, yes it has been a long long while. I let my licence lapse because I am OS for the long term and never considered myself a particularly competent driver anyway (I'm about average, which says a lot for at least half the other people on the road!) And here in China where all you need to get a car is money and the only rule is the most expensive car has right-of-way (and pedestrians and cyclists must get down on their knees to the driver's superior wealth when he blasts his horn), I've seen too much human roadkill to remain enthusiastic about cars. (Note that they drive much better in Beijing. My brother-in-law in Beijing who runs a jet-engine transport company and is also a truck driver always curses the driving out here in Shenyang)
