...in Aust, we got the basics on 'how it worked' but nothing on disease or non-reproductive sex.

In primary ed., we did have to learn about such things as, although I think only the basics are still taught explicitly, teachers are expected to be able to provide a reasonable answer to any question asked. And any of you with kids will know just how unexpectedly (to adults) sophisticated young kids can sometimes be with their questioning.

I'd agree that knowledge is the best protection against anything.
